A Year of Resilience, Innovation, and Community Support
ActionsThe Ucluelet Consumers Co-operative Association recently held its 68th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Ucluelet Community Centre. The event was a resounding success, with a strong turnout of members eager to learn about the Co-op's progress and future plans.
Overcoming Challenges, Embracing Opportunities
The meeting highlighted a year marked by both challenges and opportunities.
- Cameron Lake Wildfire: The devastating Cameron Lake wildfire significantly impacted the Co-op's operations and sales. However, our dedicated team stepped up, ensuring a steady supply of essential goods for our community during a difficult time. This experience underscored the importance of local food security, prompting the Co-op to explore innovative solutions like the upcoming Growcer initiative.
- Growcer: A Sustainable Solution: Partnering with Growcer Modular Food Solutions, the Co-op is taking a significant step towards a more resilient local food system. This innovative project will enable us to grow fresh, nutritious produce year-round, right here in Ucluelet. - Inflation and Frugal Finds: Rising inflation posed challenges, but the Co-op remained committed to keeping prices competitive and supporting our dedicated team members. To further ease the burden on our community, we launched the "Frugal Finds" program, offering discounted food items nearing their best-by dates. Community Partnerships and Education
This year also marked exciting collaborations with community organizations:
- Raincoast Education Society: The Co-op completed a $30,000 commitment to the Raincoast Education Society, demonstrating our dedication to supporting local educational initiatives.
- Clayoquot Biosphere Trust: We announced a new partnership with the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust to develop a Community Teaching Kitchen, empowering community members with culinary and nutrition skills. Michelle Hall, Campaign and Donor Relations Lead for the Biosphere Centre, gave an inspiring presentation on this exciting project.
Celebrating Our Team
A highlight of the AGM was recognizing our outstanding team members:
- Excellence Award Winner Of The Year: Kyle Henry was honored as the recipient of the Excellence Award, receiving a $1,000 prize for his exceptional contribution to our team. We extend our deepest gratitude to all our team members for their hard work and commitment to serving our community.
Looking Ahead
The AGM concluded with the election of a familiar Board of Directors, comprised of dedicated community members eager to guide the Co-op into the future: Marnel Saunders, Lindsay Grills, Denise Stys-Norman, Gord Dunsmore, Robin Myck, Karen Severinson, and Lara Kemps.
As we move forward, we are excited about the possibilities ahead. The Ucluelet Co-op remains steadfast in its commitment to serving our community, providing quality products and services, and fostering a sustainable future. Thank you to all our members for their continued support!
