Ucluelet Co-op 2018 Sustainable Initiative Video
March 28, 2019

The Ucluelet Co-op is pleased to present our 2018 Sustainability Video.

We hope you enjoy it and we have added some background about some of the sustainable actions we have embarked on over the last year.

We are growing every year in each of the commodities we are in. We have ensured that our growth will follow a sustainable path through fiscal responsibility, environmental sustainability, community investment, employee engagement and co-operative leadership. We have invested in our future by providing housing for staff in a challenging marketplace; by providing environmental stewardship in reducing our footprint in waste and recycling our organic waste into a compostable material; and soon we'll be recycling all our waste into a biomass heat source that will heat our store and provide hot water throughout our location.

We will continuously improve our bottom line by reducing expenses of waste management with the added bonus of reduced landfill impact. Our environmental sustainability practices include no more plastic bags at our check-stands, no more plastic straws in our deli or for sale in the store, a floor cleaning system that uses no chemicals, a car wash that uses recycled and captured rain water, our board has gone paperless for all our meetings and correspondence, and we have reduced and will eliminate the need for cardboard recycling and trips to landfill through our bio-mass fuel creation system--the first in BC!

We have partnered with the Surf Rider foundation, who are stewards of Vancouver Island's beaches, oceans, and waterways to continuously improve practices of environmental sustainability for our region. Our support of their programs has made a real difference in the community! We also partner with the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust in providing funding for children’s education in environmentally sustainable practices and field trips to support this learning program.

We are very active in our community, and we are proud to be making a difference!
